Locarno: The Most Beautiful Small Town in Switzerland
Locarno was recently named the most beautiful small town in Switzerland by the German travel portal Travelbook. With its Mediterranean charm, the iconic Piazza Grande, and cultural highlights such as the Locarno Film Festival, the town captivates both residents and visitors alike. This recognition celebrates Locarno’s commitment to quality of life, sustainable urban development, and a diverse range of leisure activities.
A Well-Deserved Title at Germany’s Largest Travel Awards
At Germany’s largest travel award ceremony, the TRAVELBOOK Award, the phrase “And the winner is…” was heard for the third time. On October 9 in Berlin, a nine-member expert jury honored the best trend travel destinations in various categories. The evening was hosted by renowned TV presenter Christian Wackert-Brungs. In the “Audience Voting” category, readers had the opportunity to cast their votes, selecting the most beautiful small towns in the DACH region.
Switzerland is home to countless charming small towns, but which one is the most beautiful? Travelbook set out to answer this question by launching a survey on Facebook and Instagram, reaching over 200,000 followers and subscribers. The editorially reviewed results were compiled into a voting round, where readers had about three weeks to cast their votes. Now, the winner has been decided: Locarno!
Locarno Dominates the Audience Vote
With an impressive 30% of the votes, Locarno clearly outpaced the competition. Second place went to Spiez in the canton of Bern with 17%, while Stein am Rhein (canton of Schaffhausen) secured third place. The results highlight Locarno’s uniqueness, captivating voters with its stunning location, rich culture, and fascinating history.
Mediterranean Charm, Historical Highlights, and Cultural Diversity
The charming town on Lake Maggiore captivates visitors with its historic old town, the car-free Piazza Grande, and numerous stately palazzi. A symbol of the town and one of its most significant landmarks is the Madonna del Sasso Sanctuary, perched above Locarno. From here, visitors are treated to a breathtaking view of the town and Lake Maggiore.
Locarno is internationally renowned for the Locarno Film Festival, which draws film enthusiasts from around the globe every August. Another highlight is Moon&Stars, a summer music festival that lights up the Piazza Grande. In winter, the square transforms into a magical setting with a Christmas market and ice-skating rink.
Locarno – A Paradise on Lake Maggiore
The mild, sunny climate, proximity to the water, and a diverse range of recreational activities make Locarno not only a popular travel destination but also an attractive place to live. From historic buildings and beaches to the harbor offering excursions into Italy, Locarno has something for everyone. Those seeking relaxation can unwind in the region’s wellness retreats, especially during the winter months.
Once again, the city proves that it rightfully deserves the title of “The Most Beautiful Small Town in Switzerland.”
